- Greco EG-480B, Pre-serial number
Greco EG-480B, Affordable vintage soul < Back Greco EG-480B Pre-serial number A timeless alternative to a new Epiphone - there is a lot of sense in affordable vintage guitars over brand new ones; and yes this is bolt on neck and therefore a much smaller appeal to a traditional set neck Les Paul. If this isn't a complete turn-off, this guitar is a wonderful example of how well Fujigen were producing guitars in the mid-1970s. This one has had a very cherished life, and comes with its original fitted hard case. The 480 was the top of the range for the bolt-ons, and has superior hardware to the lower order 360s and 420s. The tuners are the well regarded and reliable "star-tuners" - these have an action and feel missing from all but the most expensive tuners today. The body is a chambered sycamore topped pancake mahogany construction, the weight is a substantial 4.38kg (9lbs 10oz); and the acoustic resonance is very pleasing even before you plug it in. The maple neck is capped with an ebony fretboard - the scale is faithful and the neck has a substantial 50s-style C-shaped profile carve, measuring .890” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. It has the feel of a far more prestigious brand. The Maxon pick-ups are never a disappointment, and have a soul, a warmth and can be as smooth or growly as you wish with the controls. This is the type of guitar you can lose hours and hours with, and it defies its price tag, and hopes you'll give it a chance despite the presence of a neck plate. A 1974 Gibson will set you back many thousands of pounds or dollars - this one will be a tiny fraction of that and is a very viable alternative to a brand new Epiphone. 50 year old guitars built by the big manufacturers in Japan are a bit of well kept secret - nothing new of a comparable price will play like these, and while the top end Super Real and Mint Series Grecos now approach the astronomical price levels that rival the Gibsons themselves, make the most of this well kept secret while it lasts and bring an EG480B into your life before the market pulls these prices up too. If you like a bit of heft to your Les Paul, prefer the company of an older guitar, give this one some serious thought. They are getting rarer in this condition - this one is in excellent condition. - Aria Pro II PB-1500, 078082
Aria Pro II PB-1500, Nobuaki Hayashi's 'Masterpiece Prototype' < Back Aria Pro II PB-1500 078082 The Prototype Range was launched by Matsumoku in 1977, and the majority of these models are 6 string guitars. The brains behind the idea was a bass player - he still makes basses today with his Atlansia company. The SB and TSB ranges are more well known, and very highly regarded; used by many professionals in the 1980s. Prior to the launch of these SB basses, a small number of PB-1500 basses were produced to accompany the PE-1500 and PE-1000 models that showcased Matsumoku's capability of designing and producing new basses, not just making high quality copies of the Precisions and Jazz basses. The bass version was only available in ultimate 1500 spec and featured the DiMarzio pick-up on the amazing neck-thru' (Transmit neck was the original term), and the finest choice of woods and luthiers to craft them. Well before Fender had its Custom Shop facility, Matsumoku had a special section of the production line to experiment, create and generally set the scene for the coming decade. Fender had tried to court Matsumoku for a partnership but Matsumoku were not interested in such a co-operation as they wanted to forge their own way and shape the future, not just prop up the past, although they would do that quite well also. Matsumoku seconded several of their master luthiers to Fujigen to enable that partnership to flourish, and as the Fender cost accountants infiltrated the production lines, Matsumoku continued to create and produce high quality guitars with the volumes to enable very competitive pricing. This PB-1500 is a very rare example of the early Masterpiece Prototype Series - produced alongside the 6 string guitars that featured in the brochures. Very rarely coming to the market, this one has had a busy life - earning its living admirably and continues to do so in a condition that will enable that for many more years. While less well known than the SB-1000 and Elites, this bass is a worthy contender and has a timeless design - one of Matsumoku's real skills was to create designs that would stand the test of time. Nobuaki Hayashi was a true artist AND a very good engineer. With its single DiMarzio pick-up and simple Master Volume and Master Tone, this is a very purposeful instrument - like the poshest Precision possible. It tips the scales at 4.69kg (10lbs 5oz) and has a lovely balance to play sitting or standing. Early versions of Gotoh GB707 are original Aria stamped units and are in perfect working order. They are future proof as current GB707 would fit straight in - no need to ever redrill this headstock. The Gibson style 3 point bridge and is in perfect working order - and again, futureproof as Hosco units fit straight on the posts. The Rosewood neck, brass nut and the fat frets are all in magnificent condition - the only indication of its age is the wear to the familiar places such as thumb rest and from the previous players' wrist just above the bridge. All natural wear and proof that this was a busy instrument - busy instruments are the good ones. Currently strung with tape-wound strings with plenty of life left, this is serviced and ready to keep plying its trade and is a discerning choice for a bassist who appreciates quality and simplicity, but something a little different from the normal Precision Bass. - 1970 Fender Precision Bass, 285152
1970 Fender Precision Bass, No chance of avoiding the term Mojo with this one < Back 1970 Fender Precision Bass 285152 The serial number 285152 and the 7270 stamp on the pick-up indicate that this is a July 1970 build - the neck stamp is a format occasionally seen between the late 60s and mid 70s, and deprive us of a simple date of construction. The pick-up leads have been repaired by us, and it reads 10.48k which is inline with contemporary instruments. The pots are original and work quietly and smoothly, but we have replaced the output jack. The hardware is also original and in great order - just some age related tarnishing on the tuners. The covers and rest are long gone unfortunately, but the case appears to be original, or at least period correct. The frets display signs of wear - this has been a busy instrument, but are still serviceable and have a few years left before any action needs taking. There is a tiny split in the input jack section of the scratchplate, which we believe to be a later replacement as I would expect a tortoiseshell guard in 1970. The thin sunburst nitro has various dings and buckle-rash, but has that wonderful crazing that no re-issue or relic exercise can achieve. This is no case queen, not part of a cherished collection, it is a 55 year old bass not getting enough stage-time since the retirement of the previous owner. It is way too good to put away and forget about; it begs for more use. Apologies for the well-worn cliche, but this bass has mojo. Not all late 60s and early 70s Fenders meet expectations, but this one will not disappoint. A really comfortable 3.66kg (8lbs 1oz). Price ON SALE! Click Buy button to reveal latest price. - 1928 Gibson Nick Lucas Special, 85771
1928 Gibson Nick Lucas Special, To own a special piece of Gibson history < Back 1928 Gibson Nick Lucas Special 85771 This guitar is in poor condition and needs serious restoration. We have detailed pictures of the internals; the damaged bracing, and the remnants of the pin-bridge. We have a photograph of this guitar from the 1950s that shows the white repair plate, and proves that whatever accident befell this guitar, happened a long while ago. The guitar was played in concert pitch right up until the early 1990s, when it was retired and stored. The value of a restored Nick Lucas Special is known to us all, but it is still the desire of the owners to offer it for sale in its current condition to allow the new owner to decide the direction of restoration. The guitar comes in a case in similarly poor condition – the case was supplied by Manok & Renkert – a maker (and supplier to RAAF) of luggage and cases in Sydney, Australia. There is evidence of previous repairs to splits, and most of the fretboard binding is missing. The neck is surprisingly good, and a well-judged refret would enable good playability. The guitar can be taken to concert pitch with no worrying signs from the inadequately supported top, but it currently has no tension while a new owner is to be found. The guitar had been stored at close to concert pitch from 1993 until earlier this year. 2 well-known established UK luthiers have each spent 2 weeks with this guitar to provide their advice and budget quotations for restoration. The vast majority of the budget is luthier time, and so this would suit either a professional acquisition, or an owner with a very good relationship with a luthier. Offers are invited for the chance to own a very special piece of Gibson history; and obtain an opportunity to add enormous value to the investment. - Fender 1972 Custom Deluxe Telecaster NOS, R85216
Fender 1972 Custom Deluxe Telecaster NOS, < Back Fender 1972 Custom Deluxe Telecaster NOS R85216 This 2016 Greg Fessler crafted beauty is a mind-blowing example of how guitars create a first impression. Conversations stop when it is noticed - even non-players gravitate towards it and appreciate it. Capri Orange cannot fail to impress. It is a NOS model so appearing brand new - no false aging or slightly insincere grain. Two similar ones to this recently came onto the market in California - both sonic blue. Unsurprisingly neither stayed on the market for long. So, a Capri Orange Tele Deluxe with a Bigsby, built by Fessler probably is all you need to know in order to want it in your life, but let's do the details anyway. This has a solid Mahogany body, so not the lightest guitar in the world, but familiar to fans of Teles with serial numbers between 250000 and 500000. The 9.50" radius quartersawn maple neck is a "60's style Oval C" style at 0.820" to 0.930", the board is AAA EI Rosewood into which sit Sanko 6105 frets (medium jumbo). The larger Strat and colour coded headstock is another great feature of this Deluxe. This is proper twenty-six inch Elephant Bells and Poet Collars stuff. Cuban heels provided by Bigsby with a B-5 vibrato . That enormous tortoiseshell scratchplate is the disco ruffle shirt. Capri Orange? This ought to be collected in a Capri 3000GXL. But beyond the exaggerated tributes to the exaggerated early 1970's, there is a serious guitar here. Fessler looked beyond the Fender pick-up drawers for some (not all) of these Deluxes. This one features a pair of Lollar Charlie Christian pick-ups . With dedicated controls, there is a very wide range of useful and soulful sounds from this Deluxe. Roll the tones down for some big bodied jazzer tone, and set the bridge pick-up free on a slightly driven valve amp for proper 70's rock sounds . Through the simulators and Airbus A380 DAW packages, you get a responsive and expressive set of Tele tones to do what you wish with, and they stay silent when they are asked. A guitar that does most things you need brilliantly, and looks good enough to eat. And, no-one else will have one. - Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996, N561996
Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996, < Back Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996 N561996 Built in May 1996, this Bonnie Raitt signature edition Stratocaster is in 3-colour sunburst rather than the slightly more challenging blue. It has an alder body, maple narrow C profile neck and rosewood board, and the highly admired Texas Special single coils, which have an over-wound hi-presence character - great for those in-between sounds. The 4ply white Pearloid scratchplate completes the look. Like many of our finest playing instruments, this one has seen some life. There has been a minor repair to the body under the tremolo - it is completely invisible from the outside, and an unfathomable cause! Someone has been careless when removing the tremolo fixing screws perhaps. It's invisible, it doesn't affect the function in any way, but we must mention it. There are signs that the guitar has been used properly - the scratchplate screws had seen some heavy blues sweat. We have replaced them with new ones but the staining on the plate remains - signs of a good life. It is no case queen - it isn't a mint never been used collector's box ticked - this is a fine Strat that someone previously has enjoyed and used properly, (maybe not wiping it down enough but what are guitars actually for?). We have set it up on 10-46, and as a Strat that rings and rings; and an action height that can have a slide on it without fretting, but low enough to remain comfortable. The middle pick-up is set a little higher than the normal Stratocasters so those Bonnie Raitt covers will be accurate - neck and middle together is totally addictive. - Tokai ES-T
Getting the absolute best out of a late MIJ Tokai Breezy < Back Tokai ES-T Price £££ | SOLD Add to Cart Chat with Us Missed out on this model? Talk to us for a rebuild! Tokai Breezy Sounds are held in very high regard by Tele-addicts and they often reside side by side with the Fender originals. This is one of the last MIJ Breezies before production headed overseas and that MIJ soul and quality character was lost. By the time this guitar was produced, there was a choice between an ATE50 or an ATE70 - alder or Rosewood respectively. Ceramic pick-ups were standard fayre for the ATE50, and we felt the bridge unit was lacking that brittleness and depth. We choose Evil Sheep for our Dreambuild Teles - Mark truly understands the characteristics we need for these MIJ guitars. An Evil Sheep tapped Alnico 5 pick-up now provides the bridge tones - either traditional tele, or a fuller mid-boosted hotter tone that works clean as well as driven. It's neither P-90 nor humbucker - it retains the tele characteristic but thickens up the sound. Unlike coil split humbuckers, there is no dramatic rise or drop in volume between the normal and hot outputs - just a thickening and introduction of more lower mid frequencies to provide a fuller sound - ok, and yes, a bit louder on the clean channel. We had a 920d black chrome control plate just waiting for an upgrade project like this - the mini-toggle between the controls selects the output of the bridge pick-up. ATE-50 Breezies had modern but disappointing specs for controls, so we binned the mini-pots and the sealed switch and replaced them with premium CTS pots, a Sozo PIO capacitor, a CRL switch and a Switchcraft output jack; all connected with proper Gavitt. Also, gone is the TE-VBK bridge plate, and in its place is a new Gotoh Ti-TC2 chrome flat plate - no more uncomfortable palm muting. The titanium barrels provide a very clean and defined attitude to the sound - we love brass and titanium equally, but titanium always provides a definition that brass struggle with, a little tweak on the tone knob will get you back to what brass will deliver. This is all very subtle variation, but that is what Dreambuilds are for. Everything else is pure Tokai - the weight is substantial at 3.9kg (8lbs 10oz), but not overly heavy. This extra few lbs is disguised very well with a slim C neck profile and fatter frets - not the super skinny profiles and narrow frets seen in most MIJ teles of the 90s. This Tokai is stage ready - a very giggable guitar with the little sonic tricks up its sleeve will probably get you through a whole set without the need to swap guitars. Why stop here? We can upgrade the neck pick-up too, make it into a Cornwell tribute with an interesting middle pick-up - most things are possible, but this level of upgrade keeps the price manageable and gets you a reliable, fantastic playing and sounding, premium looking Tele for less than the price of an MIM Player Plus. Details The Look Original bound and pearlescent white finish, we now have a black control plate and new Fender knobs Headstock All original Neck All original maple with Rosewood board and a barely used feel to the original frets - a little fatter than a Fender. Pick-ups Original neck unit combines perfectly with an Evil Sheep Alnico 5 tapped Tele unit with 7.58 on normal wind and 11.52 on the hot wind. Bridge Now features a new Gotoh Ti-TC2 bridge plate withe the Titanium barrels. No sharp ashtray edges here. Controls New premium CTS potentiometers, Sozo PIO capacitor, CRL 3-way switch and mini toggle to select the output of the bridge pick-up. Gallery ← Previous Next→

Larrivee Custom Shop 00-50, Very rare opportunity for a Concert sized Larrivee in Mahogany. < Back Larrivee Custom Shop 00-50 121203 Larrivée 00-50 sized guitars are held in very high regard and were not made in large numbers. This is even more exclusive being a Custom Shop, produced on May 8 2013 (4 days before Chris Hadfield played a slightly smaller version of this guitar on the Space Station). This mahogany guitar has spent the majority of its life in a case in a collection, and only recently been allowed out to play. A new set of strings and a little tlc later, it has burst into life. It has a tone of its own - slightly more chime than our walnut Froggy, and a great piano like sweep across the strings. It really suits the finger more than the plectrum, but that will be the mahogany talking. With this Larrivée taking the clever lead bits and our '67 J45 taking care of the rhythm, an audience soon forms... This is rare, good and a decent investment. Unlikely to find another in mahogany, let alone in this size, I suggest a quick enquiry to bag this one. We can show you this guitar in real-time via the videocall facility if you wish. I have attempted to capture the tone and character of this lovely Concert sized acoustic in the video, so give it a listen and feel free to ask more questions. It's a cracker. Stormshadow GuitarWorks XII Custom Shop, Rare, brilliant and British < Back Stormshadow GuitarWorks XII Custom Shop 0005 Built in October 2015 in Sheffield, UK, this sensational and rare guitar is here at the Hall and offered for sale. It has been a busy guitar for a very talented local player whose styles have changed (with age!!!!) and who feels he cannot do the instrument justice any more. This is a shredder's paradise - that 25th fret can be bent to the 27th! We saw this guitar a few years ago in a road-worn and tough-life state and have spent the last year gradually and sensitively restoring it back to near original condition. The full spec for this guitar can be found on the Stormshadow GuitarWorks website in their archive section - despite that company ceasing to build guitars any more, they keep a great database of their builds. This has a Walnut body with a slim C Maple neck and Ebony fretboard. We have recently dressed the original frets and the guitar is so slick. The FU-Tone Floyd Rose tremolo brings out the hooligan in you. This guitar lost its original pick-ups, but we have just re-fitted brand new Seymour Duncan pick-ups faithful to the original specification: Hot Rails at the neck and an Alternative 8 humbucker at the bridge. An IronAge killswitch (the best ones!) is the control you don't recognise from the Stormshadow website. The rear control cavity cover has been replaced with a clear plastic one, and we can cut a new black one if that is a deal breaker. This is an interesting alternative to an Nuno (with 2 more frets and even more exclusivity), and this has that handmade feel to it that tells you it is special as soon as you pick it up. This is one of 16 XII models ever produced - grab a piece of history that happens to be a mind-bendingly good guitar as well. Price £1,620 Availability Sold Recommendation Enjoy as it is.
