Greco SE-600N Order Made, Custom made 70s perfection < Back Greco SE-600N Order Made J752164 Another immaculate example of a Strat made to order by the Fujigen Custom Shop. This is an early Fujigen build so has a pancake construction, a single piece for the top and only really sharp eyes will see the join for the 2 pieces that make up the back. The original owner ordered his guitar based around an SE-600N and opted for the Rosewood neck. This has a set of delicious slightly overwound PU-100 pick-ups to which I have raided my period correct spares drawer and fitted a 1977 DM-50 5 way switch from an SE-700. Now we have the in-between tones without the requirement to go fishing for them. The early DM-50 switches have a really nice action - so much better than anything made today. The sounds are typical Maxon - bright and snappy, the very top end tamed with a tiny bit of tone roll-off; but the 5 way really sets this guitar free. Maxons always behave impeccably with a 10-50W valve amp and get deliciously raucous with anything bigger. The clarity and definition also suit solid state Fender style amps. They manage to cover all bases - never letting you forget you are playing a genuine vintage guitar, but that character is addictive. You need a modern set of pick-ups to get the clinical efficiency and discipline, but you'll have more fun with these and the studio engineer will just have to work a little harder. Just a couple of signs of life on this one - but for a 50 year old it's doing well. Imagine Joaquim Phoenix shaved and combed hair. Gretsch 7660 Chet Atkins Nashville, Arkansas built beauty < Back Gretsch 7660 Chet Atkins Nashville 1-3069 This 7660 is a very fine example of a Baldwin era Arkansas Gretsch - this has a nice deep hollow body and a nice balance. At 3.7kg (a touch over 8lbs), it is quite weighty for a Nashville, but perfectly balanced - a bit more maple on a deeper body. The deep orange finish is amazing - just a few polishing marks and little to demonstrate 51 years of life - you will have to hold it up to the light to see the imperfections. At a fraction under 3 inches deep at the f-hole this is one of the sought after versions. This is on its original frets and there are signs of minor wear on the lower few frets, but it does not affect playability in any way. The neck profile is thin enough to achieve some Setzer speed but not skinny. The nut is 43mm, and 48mm at the 12th fret. Unlike a few of these 7660 models, this one is intonated perfectly and the action can be varied to suit you. It currently has a low action for a fast light touch Setzer style, but I had it up 1 mm to suit my fat fingered slow style and it performed equally as well. All the famous sounds are there - the tone filter is actually very useful, and with the 2 independent volume controlled pick-ups, an enormous array of tones are available. The Bigsby behaves itself - no sliding around and keeps tune admirably. To get the best out of these, you need to get familiar with the controls, they are not one-trick ponies. LEFT HANDED Fernandes LC70RR, Time-warp Randy Rhoads model < Back LEFT HANDED Fernandes LC70RR 89022LC Good LC70RRs are becoming quite sought after now, most carry the Burny name and the vast majority will be right handed. We were amazed to see a left handed Fernandes LC-70RR arrive here in its case, and untouched for a few decades. The origin of this rarity is difficult to precisely pin-point, but the highest probability is a Dyna Gakki build, but there is a possibility that it may have been FujiGen - my firm opinion is the former. I am dating this at late September 1988, one of a very small batch of left handed models made for export. The white finish has faded gracefully giving the guitar a timeless look that folk are happy to pay a fortune to replicate. Both Dyna and Fujigen were good enough for Fender to partner up with, and this is evident in the quality of this Fernandes - it feels like it will go on forever. This Randy Rhoads model has just had a thorough recommissioning after a long spell in its case - nothing required beyond routine servicing and a good clean. Inside the control cavity is a serial number of 89022LC, and the pots put this guitar in 1988, possibly 1989 - we are presuming 22nd September 1988. Left handed models were made in very small numbers, and these signature or tribute models even rarer. If there is a left handed Randy Rhoads fan out there who can't spare the £15k to have Gibson make a '74 tribute for you, I think this is as good as it can get. The quality of MIJ from this era is light years ahead of modern day products until you get to several thousand pounds. The pick-ups are original, and read 7.88k each which indicates VH-3 spec (same as John Sykes models). The hardware is in fantastic condition - the evidence of its age requires a very close inspection. The pick-guard retains the Randy Rhoads text - most have been worn away. The locking strap pins are present and correct. Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild, Rare chance to acquire a Stern Masterbuild < Back Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild UC22032277 Custom Shop Gretsches are usually very special, and this one was commissioned to be very special indeed. This is a Stephen Stern hollow body Penguin, in an extremely dark metallic green - almost black until it catches the light. Sparkly silver binding and cream sides and rear really makes this one stand out even amongst other Sterns and Madrigals. There are 3 Dynasonic pick-ups - these are 10.33k, 10.57k and 10.45k from neck to bridge, and all 3 sound phenomenal at any level of gain, and their character transforms from a warm clarity with low levels of gain right up to aggressive brightness as the drive increases; but they always feel in control - a more refined version of the original DeArmond 2000 on which they are based. Thanks to the crystal clear clarity on offer, mixing the pick-ups offers enormous versatility with tones you may not expect from a Gretsch. The control layout assumes a normal twin pick-up Gretsch in that the pick-up selector offer neck, neck and bridge, and bridge in its 3 settings, and each pick-up has its own volume control. The neighbouring toggle switch will activate the middle pick-up in any of the settings and its own volume control is the bottom knob. The middle can be heard on its own by turning the other pick-ups' volume down. On its own it is a very pleasant tone and pleasingly different. A third toggle switch feeds the signal through a pair of Squeezeboxes to give you the usual Gretsch tone pre-sets. A Master Volume with a treble bleed completes the control layout. The Bigsby provides the normal wobble of the pitch, but stays firmly in place at all times - no chance of tuning instability with this one. Almost unplayed since new, this joined a large collection and shows no signs of use. The binding and paint have expanded at slightly different rates and this occurred a few weeks after delivery and has not changed since. Moog Taurus I, King Crimson, Zappa, Sklar, Wyman: you can be them... < Back Moog Taurus I T 2071 This marvellous bit of the 1970s gave the guitarist / bassist the opportunity to be Rick Wakeman for a while. This is where it all really started - the first set of bass synth pedals that the professionals really took seriously. Is it as loud as the professionals claimed it to be? Absolutely. It makes the Hall shake - we have had complaints about it from people living in different buildings. In the environments it was designed for, you feel it, then hear it. Yet it DI's straight into the Focusrite, or through the Fishman Soundbox mini and that big arena feeling is right there in the headphones without any tinkering. The Octave button allows you to double the pedal count, and a quick well rehearsed manoeuvre will actually unleash 4 octaves for your feet. Even plugged into a simple transistor amp, this will produce the arena shaking bass - it delivers a real feeling of power even at low decibel counts. These don't regularly come up for sale - often they have lost their control panel surround which is exposes the guts to too much of the outside world of a gig. This example is far from mint, but has not lost any pedals, knobs, or vital components. As with most surviving examples, it has a wonky power cable grommet, but this is still holding firm and doesn't affect its functionality. The LED for the Variable switch has given up, and we have decided not to violate the main PCB to replace this. Other than that, the unit functions as it should. If I were to really nit-pick, just the Oscillator B Frequency slider sometimes needs a little gentle persuasion to fire up its pitch, but it ultimately never fails to do so. It's big, it's basic, it's heavy and it's expensive. But worth it for the vanishingly rare opportunity to make and be seen making, these sounds for real. The previous owner hauled it around in an adapted golf bag, but admits it hasn't been used in anger since the late 1980s. It's 13kg by itself - a typical case will probably nearly double that. Greco TE-280, Old Warrior ready for battle < Back Greco TE-280 Pre-serial Number Another great old Tele from that golden era. This one arrived covered in green sparkly stickers and missing its bridge completely. Presumably once very busy, but retired less than gracefully, there is no 1970s MIJ guitar that can't be rescued and made to live on indefinitely. Now wearing new frets, sporting a new Wilkinson Bridge and a Maxon bridge pick-up to match the creamy perfection of the classic Tele-neck Maxon, this Tele is ready to serve and try to puts its sticker bombing and parts-raiding behind it. The Wilky bridge came with a brass plate for the pick-up base, and this is now adapted for the Maxon pick-up. Is there a difference? The sound gives up less easily - there is a sense of strength to the tone, but doesn't fundamentally affect the signature howly snarly tone. It used to be white, its now yellow - a lot of the MIJ white guitars are now yellow; but not true yellow, just has "become yellow". The new frets give it the new guitar feel, but you're never in doubt this is an oldie, and the Gibson scale will remind you this is a MIJ oldie. The truss rod cover clearly harks back to the late 60s and early 70s models from Fujigen and Matsumoku. They are usually missing so it is great to have it still in place. Spelling errors too - all lovely early 1970s MIJ. Being the lowly TE-280, there is a sense of purpose rather than a celebration of Leo Fender. Fans of neck pick-ups don't usually default to the Tele, but that all changes when there is a Maxon involved. It needs a new category - it is warm, creamy and smooth, yet still bites and has an airiness. The bridge will provide everything from Country to Punk - especially Punk. Westminster TE-400, Last of the short fat Maxons < Back Westminster TE-400 C760472 By a fair margin, these are our most popular guitars either in their restored original condition, or to a varying degree of upgrade. This one is a fine example of the breed - the 3.70kg (8lbs 2oz) weight is a fairly light example, and beautifully balanced. The White finish has gracefully faded and there are 49 years worth of scars and chips - the sort of finish that costs a lot more when buying a new guitars. That big fat Maxon at the neck is perhaps the signature sound for these Teles - they are so creamy, and have a surprising amount of wire in them to get a stronger sound than you may expect. It teams up with a proper valve amp perfectly and from Jazz to Blues, it will serve you well. There is nothing to accurately compare it to - it is in a league of its own. The bridge Maxon remains and delivers that biting howling tone you expect from your favourite Tele in the rack. A tiny nudge down on the volume control warms up the tone without losing the presence. The guitar has been subtly upgraded under the control plate by the previous owner - a modern 3-way switch and the volume pot has been replaced like for like for the original. This just adds a bit of peace of mind reliability for the gigs. Any pre-1976 Matsumoku Tele will have the amazing full C Harayama neck - not a telegraph pole, but much more substantial than skinny JV Fujigen Teles. The Gibson scale may horrify the purists, but this is how the Matsumoku Teles were - even the later Backaroo Arias were shorter than a Fender. Swapping between a Les Paul and this Tele mid-set will be so slick! This Tele may have the Westminster decal on it, but this is identical to Aria Pro II TE-400 introduced later that year - an extra 10,000 Yen but the same guitar - the same woods, spec and finishing. A year later, the Teles all became Fender scale, and had the more traditional style of Tele pick-up. The prospect here then is a genuine vintage guitar - that solid feel of an early Matsumoku guitar, and the cheeky differences between a Fender and Nobuaki's opinion on what a Tele ought to feel and sound like. Vive la difference, let this be an enjoyable and useful addition to the armoury, or it can serve as your one and only. 1987 Bill Lawrence Esquire BTOR55B, < Back 1987 Bill Lawrence Esquire BTOR55B B17305 This is a very very rare Yoshino built 1987 Bill Lawrence Esquire with a Seymour Duncan STL-1 Vintage '54 pick-up and single volume control. The contoured and sculpted body is a nice surprising boost for comfort - aching ribs from a regular Tele/Esquire won't be a thing here. At 3.6kg precisely, it is a nice comfortable weight and feels very balanced hung high or low on a strap. The original black hardware is all high quality Gotoh and in fine working order. Having a tremolo on an Esquire is a very unusual prospect but a very welcome one. This was a short-lived range of guitars only available in Japan which was the result of a feisty relationship between Moridaira and Bill Lawrence. The tone from the Seymour Duncan is as you'd expect - powerful and capable of vintage twang and thick overdriven aggression. With such minimal controls, it really is you and your playing style; but that is what this type of guitar is about. This one has had a busy life - it comes complete with plenty of scratches and a couple of dents in the lacquer. The little chip in the paint by the string tree was repaired and a new string tree was installed since earlier photos were taken . Nothing that detracts from its functionality. It is a good sounding, good playing and interesting guitar. Fernandes STJ-80BT, 90's rock heaven < Back Fernandes STJ-80BT Signature Models have no Serial Numbers Buck Tick was (and still is) a well-known post-punk rock band in Japan – both guitarists are very loyal to Fernandes and have had signature models since the beginning. This is one of Hisashi Imai’ s models – they became increasingly wild as the years progressed. These STJs are so damn good we have 4 of them and will try and get more. A double octave super slim and slick neck, fixed bridge and simple set-up – basically a Telecaster on steroids, then a dose of something illegal. These are pro-level instruments – obvious as soon as you pick it up. In the past, someone has had a GK-3 synth pick-up on it. This one also has its original active FGI-T pickups , and they sound fine. These were domestic market only – we never had them in UK. 1977 Greco SE-700W Early Sixties, Earlier weightier Early Sixties model < Back 1977 Greco SE-700W Early Sixties I774760 The Greco SE-700 was the premium big-headstock model of the range in the 1970s. In 1977, there were 2 SE-700 models in the range, a small headstock maple neck version with PU-100 pick-ups and a 3-way switch - these were built in tiny numbers. This is not one of these, it is the more familiar and highly regarded Early Sixties model, with the PU-119 (Excels) and the 5-way switch. These are every bit as good as their well deserved reputation suggests. Each of the 5 positions (including the middle on its own) has a distinctive character and there is no weak position amongst them and all respond well to subtle control changes on the guitar and the amplifier. The controls and switch are all original, in fact everything on this guitar other than the strings remains original - the bridge and tuners are all in great aged condition - most importantly perfectly functioning. At precisely 4.40kg (9lbs 11oz) this has, despite the Early Sixties moniker, a very 1970s weight and feel to it - the aged white finish fading to cream gives it that authentic vintage touch too. It isn't completely flawless, there are signs of life, but nothing to detract. 1977 Grecos regularly seem to have a lot more weight to them that earlier and later years - we'd class this as a 'heavy strat' - there are other lighter models here if this is a deal-breaker. The serial Number on this one is I774760, a late November 1977 Fujigen build from the time they were really showing off to impress the boys from Corona prior to the partnership. A Fender guitar from this CBS era is hit and miss - there were some real howlers, and even the good ones are likely to have been upgraded by now. During this era, Fujigen and their contemporaries were just the opposite - getting better and better. We adore all SE-700 models, and have a special soft spot for this one as it bucks the trend and has its extra kilogram and wears it very gracefully indeed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKIYEkOh84U There is scope for further work to this guitar - even though the frets have plenty of life left in them, a set of Tall Narrow on this neck; together with a Gotoh 510T tremolo upgrade turns this already fantastic guitar into Custom Shop eater - but without the catastrophic price tag. We don't see the need to upgrade the amazing PU-119 pick-ups, the only worthwhile upgrade would be a set of Haussel Desperados but definitiely give these Excels a chance beforehand. Fender Masterbuilt Custom Shop Telecaster, Maybe the ultimate Telecaster < Back Fender Masterbuilt Custom Shop Telecaster CZ524371 Your chance to own one of Fender's finest ever instruments - Masterbuilt Fenders need little introduction, so we can just enjoy the pictures of Dennis Galuszka's CZ524371 . Someone, somewhere will see them and know that this is their guitar - they have to have it. Sold to the current and only owner in 2014, this guitar has had very little use and has been carefully and appropriately stored amongst a large collection. Once we're over the amazing white Moto covering, we can check whether it can cash the cheque it writes. The first acoustic strum will probably tell you all you need to know - the feel of the neck, and the plugged-in tones will confirm it all. This is a truly special instrument. The 7.25" radius board is AAA rosewood with 93993 frets (I think these are 9150 ). The pick-ups are Fender Pure Vintage staggered pole with 7.4k and 6.0k bridge and neck respectively. Eagle eyes will notice the titanium barrels - this was an upgrade performed at the supplying dealer and the original brass units are in the C&G case.
