  • 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, A783328

1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, The ones that scared the hell out of Fender... < Back 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties A783328 The Greco SE-700 was the premium big-headstock model of the range in the 1970s. It has a 2 piece body and the rosewood board gives it a real 70's look (despite the model name). The guitar retains it's original PU-119 (Excels) and they are every bit as good as their well deserved reputation suggests. Each of the 5 positions (including the middle on its own) has a distinctive character and there is no weak position amongst them and all respond well to subtle control changes on the guitar and the amplifier. The controls and switch are all original, in fact everything on this guitar other than the strings remains original - the bridge and tuners are all in great aged condition - most importantly perfectly functioning. At a fraction over 3.6kg (8lbs 0oz) this has "that perfect Strat" weight and feel to it - the aged white finish fading to cream gives it that authentic vintage touch too. It isn't completely flawless, there are signs of life, but nothing to detract. Study the photos, and contact us if you want to see this in more detail. The frets are good with plenty of life left; they are, according to the 2 gentlemen that attend to frets here, of that perfect age and state to be your best friend, and remain so for a fair few years before any remediation required. The serial Number on this one is A783328, a late January 1978 Fujigen build from the time they were really showing off to impress the boys from Corona prior to the partnership. A Fender guitar from this CBS era is hit and miss - there were some real howlers, and even the good ones are likely to have been upgraded by now. During this era, Fujigen and their contemporaries were just the opposite - getting better and better. This guitar feels like one of their very best. This SE-700 will put guitars twice its price to shame. Price £1,195 Availability Sold Recommendation Enjoy as it is. • Matsumoku Frontman II

Gritty Growly Yellow Super Strat < Back Matsumoku Frontman II Price £1,999 | SOLD Add to Cart Chat with Us Missed out on this model? Talk to us for a rebuild! I'll assume you have read the Frontman I page and so shan't go into the background save to say I deprived a band leader of a neck pick-up and so I made amends and threw in a middle for good measure. A sunburst 1979 Aria Pro II Stagecaster was about the correct weight for this anticipated build - light to medium weight, and snappy. Off came the hardware and out came the electronics - hey, off came the paint. Naked as the day it was sawn into a plank, several coats of our favourite yellow applied topped off with a black headstock. A new Gotoh GE101TS tremolo in contrasting black finish is topped by rebuilt Gotoh SG381, also in black. Having been impressed with a similar build with 2 hot P-90s, we decided to add a middle to that pair, and angle the bridge unit slightly for more gnarly aggression. A pair of Full Monty P-90s installed at the neck and bridge, we tried a few for the middle and settled on a Gotoh SC-STD unit - slightly less powerful than its neighbours, and therefore getting more of the quackiness for the parallel positions. A Master Volume and Master Tone always suffices on these guitars, so the lower tone control is a blender that fades the neck pick-up in with the bridge when the bridge pick-up is selected. Given the brief that this guitar will be the default for the neck pick-up requirements, the blender only functions on the bridge pick-up, enabling a varying degree of bass introduction to the bitey gritty bridge tone. It adds an element of airiness - some space between the top and bottom. Like a giant Tele Deluxe in the middle position. However the bridge tone is tailored, banging the pick-up selector to the neck gets you the undiluted unalloyed neck P-90. To use this guitar as a normal traditional Strat, there is a requirement to back the volume to 8.5 on the knob as wound all the way up, every tone in every position screams to get out. It isn't "angry", like Keiths Ibi#2, just energetic and keen. A very good quality PIO capacitor tames the aggression via the tone pot. This thing begs for an AC30 with a slightly past its best speaker. The P-90s will squeal at you at monster gain levels, but I think that's the whole point. You may move closer to the stack to make it more so. Our Frontman has more energy on stage than a man of his age has any right to have. Now he has a pair of guitars to match that. Details The Look Another one of our Signature Yellow guitars - big sounds need a big look. Already slightly stage-worn so no need to mollycoddle it. Headstock Black on black with black Neck Slim, but not too slim C - Stagecasters were always well known for lovely comfortable necks - this is no exception Pick-ups Neck and Bridge are Full Monty P-90s (7.8K and 8.6k), middle is a Gotoh SC-STD (8k). Black covered Soapbar size. Bridge Gotoh GE101-TS in Black Controls Master Volume, Master Tone and Neck Blender (the yellow knob). 5-way Selector Gallery ← Previous Next→

  • Shergold 124, 12420

Shergold 124, Pretend you are Mike Rutherford < Back Shergold 124 12420 This extremely rare UK built double neck is in fine condition and stage ready for a Genesis (or Julian Cope at a stretch) tribute act. The serial number is 124 20, which we assume means the 20th guitar built in this particular 12 up top, 4 below configuration. We think it dates from 1978, and the hardware and electronics are totally original and in fine working order. The only items that have been replaced during the recent re-commissioning are the guitar strings, and the scratchplate and string guide screws. One "witch hat" knob on the neck selector has been replaced by a 1970's Fuji black tip - it fits well and doesn't look out of place. The pick-ups are the original Re'An units - Re'An is synonymous with Burns of London. Jack Golder is the 'Gold' in Shergold - he and Jim Burns more or less established Burns of London. The Burns tone was popular amongst the professionals and therefore it made sense to stick with Re'An for these subsequent ventures. They are indeed great pick-ups and up top you have the choice of a single coil, regular series humbucker, or the two coils of the humbucker out of phase. The neck and bridge units have their own 3 way sliders to select how you need each pick-up and a further 3 way selector gives you neck, both or bridge. Most great sounding 12 string electrics use single coils - here you get the choice, and an additional effect of combining the pick-ups with one out of phase which provides a very interesting and useful set of tones. The bridges retain their original saddles and also the black covers which often go missing on these. Under the control plate, the electronics are of great quality and function perfectly. It is beautifully put together - the design and workmanship continuing into the areas you are unlikely to ever see. The bass guitar features one 8 pole humbucker (6.725kΩ DCR), and both necks utilise a master volume and tone control. 124 20 features a stereo output facility - the upper output socket can feed 2 amps (or signal paths), one for the bass, the other for the 12 string. A standard mono cable in the lower output socket will deliver either bass only, guitar only or having both necks live at the same time, but they will be going through the same signal path / amp and the DCR is reduced as the bass pick-up and guitar pick-up(s) are in parallel - have a look at the DCR curves to check this effect. With a stereo cable in the stereo jack, the outputs of the bass and guitar pick-ups are not affected and both necks can be in play at full output power. If you are familiar with Rick-o-Sound, then this is similar - whereas Rickenbacker delivers separate outputs for each pick-up, this delivers separate outputs from each neck. There is a stereo cable included in the sale of this guitar so get a second amp ready, or get 2 tracks on the DAW and have loads of fun. There is a flight-case with this guitar and as you can imagine, it is extremely heavy - please factor this in when considering shipping this. • Matsumoku Monaco C78

An amazing combination of old and new where it really matters. < Back Matsumoku Monaco C78 Price ££££ Add to Cart Chat with Us Back in the mid to late 1970s, factories such as Matsumoku, Fujigen, and many others were working hard to produce viable guitars to be sold with the Fender name on the headstocks. A chap called Norikatsu Harayama had mastered not only the Fender style neck, but also designed and produced his own take on it - these guitars have a quiet but solid following and respect. Harayama worked at Matsumoku throughout this period before going out on his own - one of his prodigies was the very same H Noble whose name graces the headstocks of many collectible guitars from this era. H Noble (Nobuaki Hayashi) was in charge of Matsumoku when the Stagecasters and Strikin' Sounds models were in production. Ol' Lumpy started life in March 1978 as a tobaccoburst Aria Stagecaster ST-600 with the SP-1B Fat Strat pick-ups. It had been gigged relentlessly by a guitarist under the influence of Pete Townshend - this poor old ST-600 had battle scars that defied belief, but had a fretboard that indicated proper constant use. No relic'ing here - this is all real. Passing the guitar around a team of professionals and luthiers for their comment, the absolute consensus was that the guitar played brilliantly - absolutely worth saving. A plan was drawn up, a willing new owner found, the project began. We decided to produce a tribute to the Fender International range - the gorgeous Monaco model in particular. Yellow guitars are always great. We specifically tried to blend the new and old - the only perfection required was the hardware and electronics - the perfect sound and playability with the 'old friend' look. The look of the fretboard was retained beneath its new Dunlop 6000 frets, the lumps in the bodywork also retained under its new nitrocellulose yellow finish. A set of custom wound Häussel AlNiCo5 pick-ups configured in a Gilmour fashion - the bottom tone control acting as a blender for the neck pickup - are now fitted. The bridge is now a Gotoh 510TS in Cosmo Black with matching Gotoh SGS510 locking tuners at the other end on a black headstock. A new nut and matching Cosmo hardware elsewhere complete this fascinating instrument. We played the guitar for a few months to check the decisions made, and then gave it a master-luthier set-up. The brief achieved, we now move on to produce more of these. We have a stock of donor instruments, a mature list of options that work well, and have 2 more in production currently. There remains the option of using your Aria Pro II guitar as the donor - some basic fundamental checks on the instrument will declare it fit to proceed or not. Doesn't have to be yellow, but to wear the Monaco name on the headstock, it ought to be! The choice of pick-ups and configuration will depend largely on how you'll use the guitar - the mega-bucks Häussels are only one of the options. We have plenty of other recommended pick-ups to suit different budgets. Ol' Lumpy was commissioned for a close "friend of the show" and the guitar is often here at the Hall and available to be sampled. Attention left-handers! We have one remaining ST-500L in stock here - one of the very few left handed guitars produced in 1980. The perfect donor for an upgrade project. Details The Look Refinished over those scars and lumps with cheerful yellow nitrocellulose paint. Cosmo Black Gotoh hardware with black plastic parts. A nod to the Fender International range produced by Fuji in the early 1980s Headstock Matsumoku logo with Monaco model name in Japanese. Cosmo Black Gotoh SGS510 locking tuners for stability and fast string changes Neck New Dunlop 6000 frets on original neck. Gibson frets on a Strat was a thing back in the 1980s according to the members of the team here who are old enough to remember. There is no relic'ing here - this is natural and real board wear. Pick-ups 3 x Häussel AlNiCo5 custom wound (Desperado spec) with black covers. A great output - not too hot, yet the perfect amount of mids for clean and crunchy tones. A neck blender tames the aggression from the bridge if you need to dial it back. Bridge The Gotoh 510TS in Cosmo Black has smooth solid saddles - comfortable and ultra high quality. Controls Traditional 5 way selector blade working in conjunction with the lower knob to blend the neck pick-up into the mix. Master Volume and Master Tone controls - highest quality 250k. • Greco SE-500, F781864

Greco SE-500, Ready for another 47 years < Back Greco SE-500 F781864 Always a firm favourite here, a white Greco SE-500, this one with the added bonus of a Rosewood board so a proper 1960s look! The necks on the Fujigen guitars are a much slimmer C than the earlier Matsumoku models from across town. The pick-ups are original to the guitar and by mid 1977 had evolved to PU-100s, retaining the snappy and airy brightness of the older units, but delivering a slightly more defined and controlled set of tones. We are a little excited by the serial number under the scratchplate - it starts with a 1, which can mean the experimental line; and these pick-ups are wound a little hotter than most of the PU-100 we have seen here. What is important though, is that these sound amazing - take a listen to the demo. At 3.74kg, it is right in the middle of the range we see from Fujigen for these years - there were some absolute beasts as well as some featherweights. The handshake says there is plenty there, but won't give your shoulder a hard time. This is the type of guitar that will hook you in before you even plug it in - it has an acoustic ring we only experience with either expensively upgraded models, or very high end Fenders. This guitar has been well used, and on arrival we thought it best to replace the pots that had a reluctant scratch between 0 and 1. In their place are now 3 brand new CTS pots hooked together with proper wire, and good for decades to come. Maybe the slightly faded White finish gives away its age, but that would likely be a premium feature on a new guitar! This is a prime example of a mid range guitar competing admirably with premium models. If you are a serial guitar buyer, I expect this one will be a keeper. Price ON SALE! • 1974 Greco TE-350 (Upgraded), Pre-serial number

1974 Greco TE-350 (Upgraded), Sensibly upgraded war-horse < Back 1974 Greco TE-350 (Upgraded) Pre-serial number These Gneco Teles are getting very thin on the ground now - even more so in this condition. This one dates from early 1974, and has the famous laminate neck that if you've yet to discover, I highly recommend you have a go on one to find out what the fuss is all about. We alternate between keeping these totally original, or treating them to subtle but sensible upgrades to get the absolute best out of them. We always leave the neck pick-up wherever possible - these Maxons are divine. We have upgraded the bridge plate to a new Gotoh unit with the titanium barrels - the flat edges allows more comfortable playing, and the aperture allows a modern pick-up to be fitted. For this TE-350, a Monty's Guitars 50's Broadcaster unit was fitted, and it gives the old girl a proper set of lungs. This is a Matsumoku built Greco (Gneco) , these skipped across town to Fujigen 1 year later. Keeping it in this condition and with regular use and servicing, this TE-350 is unlikely to ever lose value. This one has had a recent re-fret so has many years ahead of it without that requirement. Fresh frets on these necks give them the feel of a much more expensive guitar. It has a few little scratches and dinks, but nothing unusual or out of place on a guitar that has seen this much life. We often get the question "how does it compare to a real one?", and for some folk, unless the Fender name is present, it just won't do. These old warriors beg to differ and in our experience, sit alongside "real ones" and are called for duty usually for their neck pick-up. A 50 year old Fender is likely to cost a small fortune and unlikely to be used for live work. None of this stress exists with these Grecos. They are still sensibly priced to be obtainable, and relish being put to work. OK, so this one was sold before it even hit the market, but I have more on the way. Don't knock them until you try them! • Fender Jazzmaster 1962 NOS MasterBuilt Custom Shop, R119767

Fender Jazzmaster 1962 NOS MasterBuilt Custom Shop, Another Ron Thorn MAsterpiece < Back Fender Jazzmaster 1962 NOS MasterBuilt Custom Shop R119767 This is one of Thorn's more radical builds, and designed specifically for the previous and only owner. R119767 was ordered in 2018 via Rainbow guitars in Arizona, delivery promised in 2019, and actually arrived in 2020. The SFT has a little note at the bottom leaving the layout of the guitar to Ron Thorn to decide. Masterbuilt Custom Shops are often instruments ordered by customers to their own specific ideals, and the luthiers may not entirely agree, especially for the whacky ones. This one is a perfect mix of whacky requirements done to the luthier's satisfaction. Probably why it took an extra year... Based on a 1962 Jazzmaster, R119767 is a 2 piece Alder finished in the most amazing deep red metallic (classified as 'sparkle') - the code is LAC, and described as Very Dark Cherry Red Sparkle. The sides and back are black. The neck is quartersawn roasted Maple, with a 7.25" radius, and vintage 45085 frets on an Ebony fretboard. The nut width is 1.65", the vital 1st and 12th stats being 0.82" to .90". A familiar Jazzmaster tremolo is paired with Thorn's RSD saddle. I'll dispel the myth - these units are adjustable for both height and intonation. The 3 pick-ups are Curtis Novak Tissue box units and each has an on/off slider so you can select any and all. A Master Volume, Master Tone and Blender complete the controls. The blender operates on both Neck and Bridge pick-up, blending in and out the one that is not selected by the sliders. If the Neck and Middle are selected by the sliders, the blender knob will fade in the Bridge; if the Bridge and Middle are in play, the blender will fade in the Neck pick-up. Take the middle out of play and the same applies - the blender fading in the pick-up that is switched out. These Tissue Box units are modelled on the Barney Kessel pick-ups originally made by Kay between '58 and '68 and are very similar in character to P-90s - very present mid-range and a strong treble. These are all wound to the customers' requirements - these are: Neck 8.75k, Middle 9.51k and Bridge 10.59k. Given the differences in Neck and Bridge DCR, the blender provides an interesting mix of the two depending on which pick-up is selected on the sliders. Selecting the Neck, the blender adds a spacey airiness. Select the Bridge and the blender calms the aggression. A huge variety of tones are therefore available. The case is full of candy, and the CoA and SFT are present and correct in their binder. It's as lovely to play as it is to look at, and a marvellous addition to any collection. • 1974 Greco SE-500 , Pre-serial number model

1974 Greco SE-500 , A high performance genuine vintage guitar you can and should take on the road. < Back 1974 Greco SE-500 Pre-serial number model This is another superb example of a pre-serial number Matsumoku built Strat clone - it features the slightly more substantial neck profile than the later Fujigen and Aria products. This one arrived in decent condition but had worn its frets to the absolute limit. We decided to refret it with Jescar 55090 (similar to a vintage Gibson feel), and so favoured by guitarists in the 1970s who had worn their skinny vintage Fender frets down. These are proving very popular here with customers requiring new frets on their Fender products. Most of our DreamBuild creations have these unless a customer desires an alternative. We had a set of custom Clausen Alnico 3 pick-ups made and fitted them with a new 5-way switch and potentiometers to control them. The neck unit offers everything from Gilmour to heavy blues, the bridge is wound a little hotter and thicker, but is governed by the lower tone control which can be backed off slightly to find a more traditional bridge single. Backing the volume back to 8.5 also calms the bridge down if a super clean sound is desired. It's all there, but most importantly we think, there is enough aggression and power in that bridge pick-up to get a nod of respect from the guy with the Les Paul. The in between settings are very wide and scooped - Knopfler to funk catered for. In the middle you can be Bonnie Raitt. The bridge and tuners are original Gotoh units - a (very) narrow string spacing (10mm saddles) and 2 1/16 E to E. The tuners are also in fine health although we have upgraded the string trees. Compared to many 50-year-old working guitars, this one has led a fairly kind life - just a few parking knocks and scrapes. The finish has aged gracefully - just a few cracks in the lacquer and a nice bit of nicotine sheen in the darker areas of the sunburst. It looks and feels like a genuine vintage guitar (because it is one!), but plays and sounds like a modern upgraded reissue. Rickenbacker 350v63 Liverpool, < Back Rickenbacker 350v63 Liverpool 1314786 Very rare to find one in this beautiful Ruby Red finish, and in such excellent condition. The triple single coil toaster top pickups give you that sweeter neck position as it combines with the neck, and the 3 in parallel in the middle is as mellow as a Rickenbacker can get. Switching to the bridge gets that legendary jangle. Reading the instruction book to learn how the 5th rotary control works will unlock the ultimate versatility of this set-up. Despite the lack of cats eyes, this 350 is a semi-hollow body and it feels and hangs in a very familiar way. The 21 fret rosewood neck has a 10" radius and 24.75" scale. The guitar tips the scales at 3.06kg (6lbs 12oz). This is still a current model, although a Ruby Red one may require a long wait. This may be a 2013 build, but it has resided in 2 collections since new, has had very minimal use, and we can't find a single blemish on it. 1974 Greco SE-550N, Time warp Matsumoku Rarity < Back 1974 Greco SE-550N Pre-serial Number This is one of the rarest Greco models out there - along with the 480, this is one you will least likely find. Only featuring in the 1974 Kanda Shokai catalogue for half a year, after the 'Electric Sounds" range evolved into the "Electric Guitar" range. The 550 became the 600, and was essentially a model that used the nicest looking wood in their stock. This 550 features the more faithful copy of the vintage bridge, and it retains its cover too. This 550 has a less chunky neck, also a single piece of maple instead of the laminate 5 piece of earlier models. The board has a 9.5" radius; the nut is 41mm. The pick-ups are standard Maxon units governed by traditional 3 way switch and volume / tone functions and all work magnificently. Maxons are known for their low output airy bright snappiness that encourage Hendrix renditions, and stamp on the OD-1 and SRV repertoires take over. The overwhelming feature of this 550 aside from its rarity is the condition. It has been played, but has been meticulously cared for. Quite weighty at 3.89kg (8lbs 9oz), this may also remind you of a late 70s Fender. Like all Matsumoku necks, this one allows a super slick action, and is equally at home with a higher action.
