K-Line Truxton-SP, British Racing Telecaster! < Back K-Line Truxton-SP 170056 Yet another glorious Telecaster to tempt you with - K-Line is perhaps not the household name that Fender is, but like many of the 'boutique guitars' we have had here, this one feels like a traditional tele, well, a Cabronita style Tele, but has refinements and design details that are justified improvements. The Truxton range can be customized to your heart's content - Chris Kroenlein will always make sure departures from the standard specification work perfectly. Ordered by the previous owner to his ideal specification, this is a British Racing Green finish, and the darker hue similar to the Williams Grover Bugatti, rather than the D-types and Blower Bentleys. The light catches it and gives it an almost Kingfisher emerald sparkle. The Alder body has the upper body Strat-like contouring and belly cut which makes this such a comfortable guitar to play sitting or standing. The 21 fret Rosewood fretboard has a 10" radius with Dunlop 6125 frets (medium jumbo) on a maple neck and the familiar K-Line take on the Tele headstock shape. The nut is 1.65" and the neck profile is a Medium C. For sounds, a traditional 3-way selector provides the normal Tele configuration for the Lollar pick-ups. The neck has a Goldfoil unit with a 6.09kOhm DCR and a P-90 Soapbar with a 9.06kOhm DCR. They have a great deal of character individually and mix together perfectly. A slight departure from a traditional Telecaster, but that's the point - the goldfoil has a bright airy sound with plenty of presence, and the P-90 has a warmth and definition. It is a very expressive guitar. The Hipshot bridge provides a lot of sustain and a solid feel to the guitar. This will withstand heavy strumming with the saddles staying put against the side wall of the base unit. Standard master volume and tone govern the output in traditional Tele style. This Truxton-SP tips the scales at a nicely lightweight 3.29kg (7lbs 4oz) and is accompanied by the Certificate of Authenticity and specification label in its original G&G case. Greco SE-800N, Putting the real thing to shame < Back Greco SE-800N D781380 These higher-end premium Grecos are no longer a well-kept secret. The SE-800 was the top of the tree for Grecos in 1978 - the really well-heeled could open the Project Series catalogue and order the SE-1000 and SE-1200, but the SE-800 was the discerning choice. A real 50's style replica - very slim C neck, light as a feather, small headstock and bright airy tones from the 3-way, the beautifully engineered DM-30 switch allowing those in-between sounds to be found without the aid of a matchstick. Just a couple of parking knocks to give its age away, this has obviously been cherished. This is a super-light guitar - just 3.15kg (just under 7lbs); the lightest 800 we have ever had. So, it looks fabulous, it feels fabulous - all the parts and components are original. The pick-ups are good old PU-100 units, so bright and airy and very keen to clip that AC30 or equivalent. The grade of steel used for the bridge and more importantly the block, is higher than that seen on lower models - the ringing sustain from this guitar needs to be experienced to be believed. Whilst it is tempting to install the PU-119 higher output pick-ups, or something boutique, don't. The original PU-100s suit this guitar perfectly. Played side by side with a 1978 SE-500, we have to conclude that a higher grade bridge, the density of this higher grade ash makes a huge difference to these PU-100 units. This is a totally different class of guitar. It has balance, the handshake, the dynamics that even our resident US Professional and Vintage II Fenders can't match. Early 50's style neck, a 7.25" radius, Schaller tuners, 8 hole creamier than cream plate - this is one of the collection, or that special one you daren't take on the road. Or take it, that's what they were for after all. But finding a 1978 guitar in this condition that feels this delicious, for this kind of price is nothing short of miraculous. I bet a Fender will be a grand more than this one, and that will have a 3 bolt neck, and have a massive headstock. 1980 Aria Pro II ST-500, Fine example of a Matsumoku-built Strat. < Back 1980 Aria Pro II ST-500 C801650 This is a fine example of a mid-range Strat built by Matsumoku. Many of the 500s we find end up being transformed into DreamBuilds with stellar specifications. We kept this one back to remind ourselves just how good they were and really enjoy the side-by-side comparisons with MIM and MIA 'real ones'. This surprises a lot of people. Instead of the usual SP-II or PU-100 pick-ups, this one was ordered from new with FS-1 pick-ups. They are 13.24k, 12.47k and 13.25k, and pack a real punch. Stealthily hiding under those standard white covers, they drive an amp beautifully. For many, an older MIJ "pretender" makes for a better playing experience than a brand new Vintera, or Player grade Fender - raw material quality control ethics and diligence was a great deal higher in Japan during this era than it is now. Ultimate spec of Greco with added modern twist < Back Matsumoku DB-600 Price £1,195 | SOLD Add to Cart Chat with Us Missed out on this model? Talk to us for a rebuild! 2 things really stand out about this 1979 Greco - obviously it is a glorious looker - a proper stunner of a guitar with that deep lustrous finish, and the glorious wear on the fretboard. Many 45 year old guitars don't take a polishing particularly well, they wear their hazy lacquer with pride. Not so with this one, you would be forgiven for thinking this was an SE-800. The second stand-out quality is the versatility - we'll come to that in a minute. In 1979, the SE-600 had the small headstock, the slim C neck profile, and PU-119 Excel pick-ups. Catalogue geeks will spot an 8-hole guard where a 1979 model would have an 11 hole guard. Are we sure it isn't an 800? The neck profile and lack of brass cavity liner tells us otherwise - the spec really resembles the 1980 catalogue SE-600 model, the date stamp on the guard is 23rd December 1978, but is prefixed with a 1, so quite possibly a specification being developed. When the guitar arrived into UK from Japan, it was looking tired - exhausted would be a better description. The board wear and parking knocks are never an issue, but the cracked and broken pick-guard, the sweat-eroded and seized saddles and tuners had obviously spelled out 'final retirement'. But removing the worn out hardware and a gentle clean revealed that this guitar should and will go on for many years to come. Guitars in that condition give us the opportunity to transform them into range-topping specifications, and add some modern versatility missing when new. The guitar looks so damn good, plays so comfortably, and has 3 Excel Maxons in rude health. So, here is what we have done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7ielb0pmhY New 'close as possible' colour pick-guard with spring cover, and a selector slot to accommodate a DM-50 5-way selector to get the full Strat tone palette; new CTS premium pots and a redesign of the controls to provide Master Volume, Master Tone and a Power Dial. A what? A power dial. This works on the neck setting and bridge setting. With the knob set to zero, you will hear the PU-119 with all its high definition chime and clarity, as originally intended. Roll to 5 and you will reduce a section of the mid-range frequencies to remind you of an earlier low-output Maxon; and roll up to 10 for a mid boosted tone, knocking on the door of a humbucker. No batteries, no preamps complexity, just some imaginative wiring. An evolution of the Matsumoku PEQ controls perhaps. The bridge is a new Gotoh 510 unit - these are fabulous units and fitted to mega-bucks boutique guitars from Japan. The arm is a screw-in type, and the free-swing can be set with a grub screw. Tuners are new Gotoh SDS510 units to match the bridge. Only the best for this. Everything else is restored and original; once again we declare the best of new and old in perfect harmony. Westone Concord II, Subtly upgraded 80's favourite < Back Westone Concord II 4011193 Reunited with its bass counterpart after nearly 40 years, this 6 string full scale Concord is a delight. 4011193 lost its Super I pick-ups many years ago, a previous owner installed some Fender Ceramic coils from a MIM standard, but to our ears they were too bright and peaky. A 1978 Stagecaster ST-600B had given up a set of SP-1B during an upgrade so where better to rehome them? They give a very sparkly yet full and rounded set of tones. They will drive an amp, but you need to want to - they stay clean when you want them to. It's not trying to be a Strat, you'll need one of those as well if that's the aim, but it's a fine instrument, very well made and characterful. Like many of the Rosewood necked Matsumoku guitars here, it has a comparatively soft feel. These were workhorse instruments - they wear their parking dents with pride, but if we still have this Concord later in the year, we'll treat it to a full refinish. Rickenbacker 1997 Rose Morris 1967, < Back Rickenbacker 1997 Rose Morris 1967 GA194 Another fantastic vintage guitar that we can trace back to the day it left Shaftesbury Avenue for the first time. Not all f-hole Rickenbackers are Rose Morris guitars, but this one is. This is the 1997 model - twin pick-up no vibrato version of the 335S. GA194 has had a busy life, but used less and less in the last 20 years. A recent recommissioning returned a Trapeze to the bridge where a Gibson tailpiece had replaced the original in the 1970s. 2 new OEM knobs and a saddle cover replaced broken and missing originals, but the remaining parts and components are original and in fine health. This is neither an unused case-queen, nor an over-restored museum piece - it is an honest old Rickenbacker that still gets occasional serious use, and never fails to deliver the look, the sound and the delight of playing the right guitar for the right song. Maison® Junior, A real one - a Korean rarity < Back Maison® Junior No Number The little ® symbol on the headstock is the important bit - this is a genuine Korean Maison. This is not a modern Chinese house brand (even though they are actually quite good!) This is a mid 80s guitar (Pre YooJin acquisition) with a bolt on neck and a very good quality feel. The previous owner has upgraded the tail piece to get some intonation adjustability - always a decent idea on any Junior if you are soloing or chording high up the neck. The beauty of a bolt-on is that you can adjust the neck angle to your hearts content, and reverting to a traditional fixed tail is always possible. The P-90 is gritty, tamed well with the volume control, but rude as you like maxed. It is a little brighter than traditional TV Yellow, but none the worse for it - the paint is fairly thin in places as the previous owner was a keen polisher. It gives it a nice vintage look. 1975 Westminster SE-420, Forget the sub-£100 drop-shipped stuff, start your journey here. < Back 1975 Westminster SE-420 701848 This recently arrived Westminster SE-420 completes the trio of Mustang, Tele and Strat, and for the UK audience, these were the domestic market and Australian export versions of the Kimbara - an entry level Matsumoku produced guitar aimed at folk who wanted to start their journey or improve their basic skills on a full scale grown up electric guitar. Not to be confused with the SE-330 which was contracted out by Matsumoku to the Chushin Gakki plant which was the equivalent of the Columbus models - a good few mm thinner bodies. The SE-420 received more powerful versions of the original Maxon coils from the early 1970s models. This guitar has more power than you'd expect and you may find yourself backing off the volume a little for super clean requirements. A classic 3-way switch gives you the 3 basic tones you'd expect from a Strat of this age, and judicious positioning of the selector will locate the in between tones, but as this is a classic 3 position Strat, the middle is not RWRP and therefore the carefully selected neck and middle is in reverse phase, and through a wound up OD-3, this sound will get you a gig in a punk band. Unlike today's entry level guitar, the controls on this SE-420 are the same units as you'd see in a range topper from Greco - large body pots with great positive movement, not the tiny mini-pots that fail very shortly after anyone takes a soldering iron the base. As with its Tele brother, the tuners are the most basic ones available without resorting to strip tuners, and they are showing a little signs of their age, but they do keep tune and the teeth are all present and correct. Costs were saved at the tremolo bridge too, as the block is a strip of bent plate, not the solid resonant steel you would see on a Greco or Aria, but it still does the job well - the powerful pick-ups making up for the differences in sustain. The body is, we think, Alder and not Sen ash so there is a slight tonal difference between this and higher spec models. It is less noticeable on high gain settings, and that completes the spec differences between this and an Aria ST-400. Real MIJ-geeks will know that the Aria Pro II ST-480 from 1976 was a continuation of this SE-420 model and the ST-400 offered an improved spec for a little lower price in 1977. So confusingly, this Westminster was the premium entry-level model. Matsumoku catered for a lot of levels. We have both SE-420 and ST-400 models here side by side at the moment - playing them one after the other will justify why the 400 is a bit more expensive than the 420 - they are different evolutions of how Matsumoku was getting closer to Fender standards. The 420 offers that early MIJ feel in that you know it is different to a real Strat, but none the worse for it. This guitar has bags of character and loves being played hard through a practice amp. We prefer playing this through the Fender 15 watt Mustang amp than we do the bigger stuff in the studio. It is just great fun, and not a guitar that you will grow tired of playing - callouses will form quicker with this and you'll spend more time with it than you'd perhaps planned. As well as a brilliant practice guitar, this SE-420 wold make a cheap addition to a bigger collection of more prestigious instruments just to remind yourself of more innocent and care-free days. It will put a smile on your face. It tips the scales at a featherweight 3.18kg (7lbs exactly) and please try and forgive the signs of life around the edge, the mismatched neck tone pot, the sticker rash and the fact that I got carried away snapping the top E moments before the photoshoot. Greco EG-480B, Affordable vintage soul < Back Greco EG-480B Pre-serial number A timeless alternative to a new Epiphone - there is a lot of sense in affordable vintage guitars over brand new ones; and yes this is bolt on neck and therefore a much smaller appeal to a traditional set neck Les Paul. If this isn't a complete turn-off, this guitar is a wonderful example of how well Fujigen were producing guitars in the mid-1970s. This one has had a very cherished life, and comes with its original fitted hard case. The 480 was the top of the range for the bolt-ons, and has superior hardware to the lower order 360s and 420s. The tuners are the well regarded and reliable "star-tuners" - these have an action and feel missing from all but the most expensive tuners today. The body is a chambered sycamore topped pancake mahogany construction, the weight is a substantial 4.38kg (9lbs 10oz); and the acoustic resonance is very pleasing even before you plug it in. The maple neck is capped with an ebony fretboard - the scale is faithful and the neck has a substantial 50s-style C-shaped profile carve, measuring .890” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. It has the feel of a far more prestigious brand. The Maxon pick-ups are never a disappointment, and have a soul, a warmth and can be as smooth or growly as you wish with the controls. This is the type of guitar you can lose hours and hours with, and it defies its price tag, and hopes you'll give it a chance despite the presence of a neck plate. Greco TVB, Medium scale Fujigen built quality < Back Greco TVB B003716 From the heady days of the late 80s and early 90s, when the brand catalogues were over 100 pages long, there was so much to choose from. The vintage traditional models were still very popular, but there was strong calling for modernization - a new chapter in guitar and bass design was started. With pointy headstocks, outrageous hairstyles, carpets of effects pedals, and a sense of power being very important, this TVB was part of that movement. The general aesthetic is not a victim of fashion though - like the better known Yamaha RBX range, these guitars have stood the test of time well. 2 fine sounding humbuckers provide a very wide range of tones with the blending and simple tone controls - most styles are on call here. Don't confuse these pick-ups with the Select by EMG items - these are vastly better and hotter. We could give Coney Island a call to make us some passive Neodymium EMG crushers, but probably give these a go first - they are surprisingly good. We have replaced the original bridge with a new High Mass Gotoh unit - these are simple drop in replacements but they transform the character of the bass and add a depth to the sound as well as enhance the sustain. A modern looking medium scale bass, in great playing condition, and a requirement of its next owner to forgive a couple of dings on the back edges. I write about Harayama elsewhere (most places!) on this site - his influence on MIJ output is rarely appreciated, but without him companies we know today such as ESP and Fender Japan wouldn't be what they are today; and Prince probably wouldn't have had his MadCat Tele. You can have a bit of Harayama magic with a lot of our DreamBuild guitars - this is another fine example. Based around a 1973 Matsumoku built Greco (the original Gneco decal stays) SE-500, this already fine guitar has traded its electronics for a modern and vastly improved specification. Greco SE-600B Order Made, Perfect example of a Fujigen Custom Shop < Back Greco SE-600B Order Made H763702 This immaculate SE-600 is an example of what guitars were built by Fujigen as a result of the "Order Made Guitar Manual" - basically a Custom Shop for Grecos where precise specs could be opted for and a perfect guitar for someone delivered. Complete with the build certificate, H763702 was ordered with the SE-600 as a basis, but upgraded with the earliest iteration of the PU-119 Excel pick-ups. These pick-ups were very expensive options - they were fitted to the SE-1000 Project Series and became standard fitment for the premium SE-700 2 years later, these being F-spaced and standard Fender sized. This 1976 guitar has a PU-119 Excel in the classic Maxon size. Complete with the tremolo arm and cover, original strap and case, this SE-600 is in incredible condition and plays like a dream. Even before plugging in, you'll likely spend 20 minutes playing it acoustically and enjoy that ring we usually only experience in mega-bucks high end guitars costing many times more than this one will. When you eventually switch the amp on, the Excel pick-ups will deliver the clarity and power they are so well known for. The traditional Maxon brightness is now accompanied by a fuller low end and easing up the gain will provide a proper snarl if you want it. The 3 way switch and judicious use of the tone controls provide plenty of tonal variety - the lack of parallel options doesn't seem to matter although as with all DM-30 switches, the in-between settings can be fished for and found.
