- Matsumoku SP-600 Psychedelic
Ultimate Versatility - all the guitar you'll ever need, and you'll get noticed < Back Matsumoku SP-600 Psychedelic Price ££££ | SOLD Add to Cart Chat with Us Missed out on this model? Talk to us for a rebuild! Another Sao Paolo style build - so named due to a fantastically famous but unbelievably shy metallist originating from that particular city. These guys really know their stuff when it comes to what they want from a touring guitar, and this configuration is the result of that project. The brief sounds simple - look like a Strat, sound like a Strat, but handle foolish amounts of gain for one song, and spacey modulated clean for the next. Gimme some new sounds too. Even though the specification may read complex, and be difficult to explain in less than 20 minutes, the actual control philosophy is easy to adapt to. The 5 way switch does what you would expect, the lower tone control will get you from chimey single coil to full on hot-rail style humbucker - treble focussed with the knob down, and bass focussed with the knob pulled up. The really interesting tones emanate from that S-1 switch which will likely have you using that middle pick-up more than most. Pressing the switch will deliver a tone you won't hear on a regular Strat - the two coils will run in parallel and provide a crystal clear tone that cuts through without any shrill spikiness, or dominating bassiness. In conjunction with the pick-ups either side of it, you will find a huge array of parallel tones that don't disappear in a band mix like positions 2 and 4 sometimes can. There is a huge palette of tones to dial up and all with the standard switch arrangements - no hunting for mini-switches and making sure it is the right one. The master tone will work on the bridge pick-up as it will the other 2 but you may find yourself using the gradual coil split to define the bass / treble balance instead of just removing higher frequencies. The coil being cut never fully leaves the circuit - just enough remains in play to keep hum at bay but remove all the compression from the full series humbucker. Haussel was selected over the more familiar Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio options as we wanted some character beyond full-on power and shred. These pick-ups work very well clean, and many mega-bucks boutique luthiers around the world choose Harry Haussel for a reason. Phenomenally expensive, but sometimes, only the best will do. These are handmade by the man himself for the guitar in question. The revised configuration will undoubtedly take some time for familiarization, but it is unlikely that this familiarization exercise will be a chore – these Matsumoku built Grecos are an absolute dream to play. The more you explore, the more you find, and the more you can be inspired. This is a celebration of detail, quality and versatility. From the precision engineering offered by Gotoh upper end products, to the positioning of the rails on the bridge pick-up to follow the string line, this guitar is the ultimate work-horse. We love building them, and can make adjustments to the specification as you require. Oh yes, and the scratchplate - so subtle I nearly forgot. The SE-600 in 1974 was a real attempt to out-Fender Fender, and now this has jumbo frets to go with its large headstock, this thing just screams 1974. So it received a frilly collar, 19 inch bell-bottoms and Bold as Love and Disraeli Gears albums under its arm. Peace man. Details The Look Roadworn but scrubs up well - the top end hardware is all new and shiny. Old and new where it matters most. An estimated 25 years ago, this originally black 1974 SE-600 was stripped and refinished in black nitro. Headstock Big 1970s headstock style with orignal star tuners. Neck The SE-600 in late 74 featured a slightly slimmer neck more similar to the early and now appreciated and adored MIJ Squiers. The 7.25 radius maple neck now features a fresh set of Jescar 45100 Jumbo frets as you would find on a premium Gibson - this was a popular upgrade to Strats during the 70s amongst the guitarists who's made a bit of money but wasn't yet having endorsements thrown at them. Pick-ups 3 x Häussel ST Blades (Alnico V) wound for this guitar with black covers and compensated rails on the bridge unit for the angle. Bridge Luxurious quality and totally appropriate for these guitars - the Gotoh NS510T tremolo is about as good as it gets. Controls New CRL 5-way selector, S-1 Master Volume with Middle pick-up mode (series or parallel), CTS 500k Tone pot, Bourns 500k coil splitter (linear) with push/pull to direct slpit direction. Paper-in-oil capacitor for good taming. Huge versatility but retaining the aesthetical purity. Gallery ← Previous Next→
- Westminster TE-400, C760472
Westminster TE-400, Last of the short fat Maxons < Back Westminster TE-400 C760472 By a fair margin, these are our most popular guitars either in their restored original condition, or to a varying degree of upgrade. This one is a fine example of the breed - the 3.70kg (8lbs 2oz) weight is a fairly light example, and beautifully balanced. The White finish has gracefully faded and there are 49 years worth of scars and chips - the sort of finish that costs a lot more when buying a new guitars. That big fat Maxon at the neck is perhaps the signature sound for these Teles - they are so creamy, and have a surprising amount of wire in them to get a stronger sound than you may expect. It teams up with a proper valve amp perfectly and from Jazz to Blues, it will serve you well. There is nothing to accurately compare it to - it is in a league of its own. The bridge Maxon remains and delivers that biting howling tone you expect from your favourite Tele in the rack. A tiny nudge down on the volume control warms up the tone without losing the presence. The guitar has been subtly upgraded under the control plate by the previous owner - a modern 3-way switch and the volume pot has been replaced like for like for the original. This just adds a bit of peace of mind reliability for the gigs. Any pre-1976 Matsumoku Tele will have the amazing full C Harayama neck - not a telegraph pole, but much more substantial than skinny JV Fujigen Teles. The Gibson scale may horrify the purists, but this is how the Matsumoku Teles were - even the later Backaroo Arias were shorter than a Fender. Swapping between a Les Paul and this Tele mid-set will be so slick! This Tele may have the Westminster decal on it, but this is identical to Aria Pro II TE-400 introduced later that year - an extra 10,000 Yen but the same guitar - the same woods, spec and finishing. A year later, the Teles all became Fender scale, and had the more traditional style of Tele pick-up. The prospect here then is a genuine vintage guitar - that solid feel of an early Matsumoku guitar, and the cheeky differences between a Fender and Nobuaki's opinion on what a Tele ought to feel and sound like. Vive la difference, let this be an enjoyable and useful addition to the armoury, or it can serve as your one and only. We can go nuts on it and give it a more modern bridge and pick-up - we can put some Gibson frets in; upgrade the tuners; anything is possible if the budget is there, but this can stand on its own 2 feet as it is. - Greco SE-600SB Order Made, Pre-serial number
Greco SE-600SB Order Made, The ultimate spec < Back Greco SE-600SB Order Made Pre-serial number 1974 saw a run of SE-600s from a particularly dense batch of sen ash – we have had a few of them through here and if you can cope with the 1970s heft, the reward is it will outlast you and several generations beyond. This one is extra special as it has come through the Order Made system and features a rather delicious rosewood fretboard with a much more substantial fret – this option would have added nearly a quarter to the original price. Luxury indeed. An identical looking guitar featured in the 1974/5 Kanda catalogue with the price tag of ¥78,000 – this pre-dated the SE-800 by a few months, so this must have been the most expensive Greco Strat at the time. The pick-ups are PU-100 units, so another optional upgrade in 1974 as these only became generally available in the SE-800 in 1976. Behind these geeky details is a guitar purchased by a discerning customer with a substantial budget, and as this guitar came to us via the family of the original and only former owner, the condition is ideal: a few parking knocks and cable dings to prove it has been used, but always cleaned afterwards, always serviced properly, always reliable. Maxon pick-ups are always characterful - the really early ones impeccably misbehave in front of high gain amps, the later ones give the same wildness but in a more controllable fashion, and then the PU-100 and 119 came along to embarrass Fender with their clarity and chime. The PU-100 units feature here, and are very good tributes to the 1950s tones, and beg for a warm valve amp to really give their all. This one has had the really useful conversion to alter the function of the lower tone control to a mid-blend which forgoes the middle pick-up on its own and gives you the neck and bridge in the middle position, and the lower tone knob dials in the middle pick-up into all 3 positions. All the Knopfler and Hendrix possibilities, and a visually unchanged guitar. As with many of these old conversions, the original components and wires are used - just reconfigured. Big headstock, rosewood neck, 70s heft, genuinely old 3-colour sunburst Strat, a huge tone palette - this should tick some boxes. This or a new Player II? Well, they were built to much higher standards in Japan, and from that era when building guitars was about the guitars, the halcyon days of when the accountants just counted money and didn’t get involved in lowering costs. - 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, A783053
1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, The ones that scared the hell out of Fender... < Back 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties A783053 The Greco SE-700 was the premium big-headstock model of the range in the 1970s. It has a 2 piece body and the rosewood board gives it a real 70's look (despite the model name). The guitar retains it's original PU-119 (Excels) and they are every bit as good as their well deserved reputation suggests. Each of the 5 positions (including the middle on its own) has a distinctive character and there is no weak position amongst them and all respond well to subtle control changes on the guitar and the amplifier. The controls and switch are all original, in fact everything on this guitar other than the strings remains original - the bridge and tuners are all in great aged condition - most importantly perfectly functioning. At a fraction over 3. 4k g (7lbs 8oz) this has "that perfect Strat" weight and feel to it - the aged white finish fading to cream gives it that authentic vintage touch too. It isn't completely flawless, there are signs of life, but nothing to detract. Study the photos, and contact us if you want to see this in more detail. The frets are good with plenty of life left; they are, according to the 2 gentlemen that attend to frets here, of that perfect age and state to be your best friend, and remain so for a fair few years before any remediation required. The serial Number on this one is A783053, a late January 1978 Fujigen build from the time they were really showing off to impress the boys from Corona prior to the partnership. A Fender guitar from this CBS era is hit and miss - there were some real howlers, and even the good ones are likely to have been upgraded by now. During this era, Fujigen and their contemporaries were just the opposite - getting better and better. This guitar feels like one of their very best. This SE-700 will put guitars twice its price to shame. Price £1,295 Availability Sold Recommendation Enjoy as it is. - 1959 Hofner President | Restoration
Family heirloom now perfect < Back 1959 Hofner President Free Consultation Book Now Restoration Many family photo albums have a few pictures of a relative playing a guitar, and then the guitar is discovered in an attic, or a storage facility following house clearances - more often than not the conditions of storage are devastating to instruments like this. This beautiful Hofner President had a gentler life following the owner's passing - it was a permanent reminder and hung on various walls - wherever life took it, it would be on a wall, finally ending up on a wall in France. Still with 5 of its 6 strings from the 1970s, the various temperatures and humidities had left their mark on this - the frets were almost 100% rust, the finish had lost all its lustre, and all other metal parts severely tarnished. But everything was original, everything functioned or was capable of functionning, so a gentle recommissioning started. Nothing complicated or particularly challenging here, just care, patience and determination to restore the original parts. A set of Thomastik-Infeld Plectrum 011-050 now on which make the guitar sound so characterful, and also keep the look of the guitar as the family remember. It will go back on the wall, but can now be taken down and played by visitors. Memories now truly brought to life. Gallery ← Previous Next→
- Aria Pro II LS600D VS | Restoration
Full rescue! < Back Aria Pro II LS600D VS Free Consultation Book Now Restoration Most folk only realise how great these guitars are after they have traded them in for Gibsons. Sure, the brand doesn't have the universal aspirational appeal of the Gibson, but the actual guitar itself punches well above its weight - back in the 1980s, these were actually obtainable; not a huge volume available, but at a price that could be saved up for. Functionally, this was the model with all the toys - massively powerful pick-ups that blow hot T-Tops into the weeds, 2 albums worth of tones, and that probably unnecessary booster, but always nce to have even more on tap. Silky smooth to play, a decent weight and materials that compare favourably with any high end contemporary Gibson - everyone that traded theirs in eventually regretted it. This one had undergone a very traumatic attempt to recommission - I think the technician probably came off worse than the guitar - these are complicated beasts. No reliable formal technical guides exist for them, and you either know how these go together or you don't. Luckily we do - it is what we exist for. With only the bridge pick-up making any noise, and the mini-toggles behaving like kill-switches, a valiant attempt had been made to re-install the original pick-ups. This really was a rip it up and start again full re-wire, and now we have the coil splits and the phase reversal doing their jobs, and that lovely creamy neck pick-up is back. The booster and Varitone are now configured correctly again, all the little details are right. This now feels like its a few years old - beautifully played in; but most importantly has all its functions again. They really don't make them like this any more. It's hard to believe, and easy to fall for all the super-slick marketing efforts of modern brands, but until you play one like this, you don't have the right benchmark. They were built to outlast us all, maybe provide a nervous breakdown for Gibson worshipping technicians, but look after them and they'll look after you. Gallery ← Previous Next→
