- 1977 Aria ST-500N, E771352
1977 Aria ST-500N, 70's nirvana < Back 1977 Aria ST-500N E771352 Pure 1970's on offer here - the big headstock, a well-shouldered substantial C-shaped neck, natural finish and some growly single coils (5.4-5.5k). When the Greco range was transferred to Fujigen and became more and more faithful to US Fenders, Matsumoku continued to produce these guitars with their chosen characteristics - mostly retaining the chunkier neck profiles. Curiously, only the entry level 400 model featured a 5 way switch - all other 500 and 600 models retained 3 way simplicity. We have given this ST-500 the 5-way switch it so deserves so now you have the in-between tones - save the dexterity for the fretboard. While we were there, we allowed the lower tone control to govern the bridge pick-up too for some great rhythm tones. The condition of this guitar is outstanding - usually these late 70s guitars show a fair bit of wear and tear - not so this one. Ok, the sticker that graced the guitar behind the tremolo has left a tan-line, but that is the only real sign of it being 48 years old. Obviously cherished throughout its life, this is a recent arrival from Japan, and there really isn't too much more to say beyond it being a comfortable dependable fashion-proof instrument that is perfectly fine for home or gig duties. It tips the scales at 3.46kg (7lbs 10oz) so nice and light for an Ash/Maple combo. As most of the Stagecaster and Strikin' Sound guitars were small headstock guitars, this is a rare chance to get one with a large headstock. It's good to go as it is, but could serve as the basis for a nice upgrade project. - 1972 Fender Telecaster, 343141
1972 Fender Telecaster, My best pal < Back 1972 Fender Telecaster 343141 This is a 1972 Fender Telecaster which started its life as a Blonde Standard Telecaster, but throughout the 1970s received a beautiful top, some binding and it does a fairly good impression of a 58 Custom, but the serial number and neck markings / remnants of blonde confirm this as a 1972. Converted to a Nashville specification, the guitar has a standard Strat configuration - it has had various recent wiring conversions to allow the classic Middle position of Neck and Bridge via a push pull, then an S-1, but I have restored it back to standard 5 way. I can easily reconvert it if the next buyer requires - just speak to us to discuss that. The neck and bridge pick-ups are original to the guitar, and I believe the middle arrived in the 1970s and is a Fender pick-up. I have put an Oak Grigsby 5 way switch and CTS 250 pots recently - it received a refret about 15 years ago and has had little use since then, but purely due to the ever increasing amount of guitars in the collection. This is, and always has been, my favourite, and I have owned it since the mid 1980s. At 3.57kg (7lbs 14oz), this is a forgiving 70s weight - just enough, not too much. Of course I will regret selling this, but it deserves to be used more than I do. There are lots of lovely stories with this guitar - none of them can be proven, so shall remain in folklore. But it is a gorgeous old 70's Tele, plays as well as it looks. - K-Line Truxton-SP, 170056
K-Line Truxton-SP, British Racing Telecaster! < Back K-Line Truxton-SP 170056 Yet another glorious Telecaster to tempt you with - K-Line is perhaps not the household name that Fender is, but like many of the 'boutique guitars' we have had here, this one feels like a traditional tele, well, a Cabronita style Tele, but has refinements and design details that are justified improvements. The Truxton range can be customized to your heart's content - Chris Kroenlein will always make sure departures from the standard specification work perfectly. Ordered by the previous owner to his ideal specification, this is a British Racing Green finish, and the darker hue similar to the Williams Grover Bugatti, rather than the D-types and Blower Bentleys. The light catches it and gives it an almost Kingfisher emerald sparkle. The Alder body has the upper body Strat-like contouring and belly cut which makes this such a comfortable guitar to play sitting or standing. The 21 fret Rosewood fretboard has a 10" radius with Dunlop 6125 frets (medium jumbo) on a maple neck and the familiar K-Line take on the Tele headstock shape. The nut is 1.65" and the neck profile is a Medium C. For sounds, a traditional 3-way selector provides the normal Tele configuration for the Lollar pick-ups. The neck has a Goldfoil unit with a 6.09kOhm DCR and a P-90 Soapbar with a 9.06kOhm DCR. They have a great deal of character individually and mix together perfectly. A slight departure from a traditional Telecaster, but that's the point - the goldfoil has a bright airy sound with plenty of presence, and the P-90 has a warmth and definition. It is a very expressive guitar. The Hipshot bridge provides a lot of sustain and a solid feel to the guitar. This will withstand heavy strumming with the saddles staying put against the side wall of the base unit. Standard master volume and tone govern the output in traditional Tele style. This Truxton-SP tips the scales at a nicely lightweight 3.29kg (7lbs 4oz) and is accompanied by the Certificate of Authenticity and specification label in its original G&G case. Available to try here at Ketteringham Hall, this is a very rare guitar in a possibly unique specification. It is virtually unused - in flawless condition. A new custom order equivalent build from Chris is likely to require a budget well in excess of £3,000 before the taxman has a look, so this is a great way of adding a K-Line to the collection without the wait and with a big saving too. - 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, A783053
1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties, The ones that scared the hell out of Fender... < Back 1978 Greco SE-700 Early Sixties A783053 The Greco SE-700 was the premium big-headstock model of the range in the 1970s. It has a 2 piece body and the rosewood board gives it a real 70's look (despite the model name). The guitar retains it's original PU-119 (Excels) and they are every bit as good as their well deserved reputation suggests. Each of the 5 positions (including the middle on its own) has a distinctive character and there is no weak position amongst them and all respond well to subtle control changes on the guitar and the amplifier. The controls and switch are all original, in fact everything on this guitar other than the strings remains original - the bridge and tuners are all in great aged condition - most importantly perfectly functioning. At a fraction over 3. 4k g (7lbs 8oz) this has "that perfect Strat" weight and feel to it - the aged white finish fading to cream gives it that authentic vintage touch too. It isn't completely flawless, there are signs of life, but nothing to detract. Study the photos, and contact us if you want to see this in more detail. The frets are good with plenty of life left; they are, according to the 2 gentlemen that attend to frets here, of that perfect age and state to be your best friend, and remain so for a fair few years before any remediation required. The serial Number on this one is A783053, a late January 1978 Fujigen build from the time they were really showing off to impress the boys from Corona prior to the partnership. A Fender guitar from this CBS era is hit and miss - there were some real howlers, and even the good ones are likely to have been upgraded by now. During this era, Fujigen and their contemporaries were just the opposite - getting better and better. This guitar feels like one of their very best. This SE-700 will put guitars twice its price to shame. Price £1,195 Availability 1 at Ketteringham Hall Recommendation Enjoy as it is. - 1974 Greco SE-430, Pre Serial Number
1974 Greco SE-430, Last of the 430s < Back 1974 Greco SE-430 Pre Serial Number This is a very rare opportunity to have an early Matsumoku Strat with the engineered neck and the added bonus of new Jescar 55090 frets - another 10-20 years of just routine servicing for this one. If you haven't experienced one of these Harayama necks yet, I urge you to give them a try - people of all tastes in neck seem to love them. Even Caleb likes them, which is a relief as he bought 2 of them. Obviously this looks amazing - timeless faded white with 20 a day Marlboro Red stained plastics. No wheezing and wheeling around an oxygen tank for this one though - the Maxons are still doing their thing - bright and airy, and cutting through in all positions. There has been a DM-50 out of an Early Sixties SE-700 on my desk for about a year - waiting for a worthy candidate for retro-fitting. This is it. No doubt. So we have all the traditional Strat tones, and you can quack and cluck as well as bite and snarl. The 9.5 radius neck feels a little flatter then it is, but that is the neck shape making itself known. The rest of the hardware is original and in rude health. The tremolo bridge may look a little pre-historic, but it works every bt as well as the Fender style ones that followed. Great looking, great sounding, fastidiously restored and prepared for another 51 years. Maybe more. These were made to last. - Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996, N561996
Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996, < Back Fender Bonnie Raitt Signature 1996 N561996 Built in May 1996, this Bonnie Raitt signature edition Stratocaster is in 3-colour sunburst rather than the slightly more challenging blue. It has an alder body, maple narrow C profile neck and rosewood board, and the highly admired Texas Special single coils, which have an over-wound hi-presence character - great for those in-between sounds. The 4ply white Pearloid scratchplate completes the look. Like many of our finest playing instruments, this one has seen some life. There has been a minor repair to the body under the tremolo - it is completely invisible from the outside, and an unfathomable cause! Someone has been careless when removing the tremolo fixing screws perhaps. It's invisible, it doesn't affect the function in any way, but we must mention it. There are signs that the guitar has been used properly - the scratchplate screws had seen some heavy blues sweat. We have replaced them with new ones but the staining on the plate remains - signs of a good life. It is no case queen - it isn't a mint never been used collector's box ticked - this is a fine Strat that someone previously has enjoyed and used properly, (maybe not wiping it down enough but what are guitars actually for?). We have set it up on 10-46, and as a Strat that rings and rings; and an action height that can have a slide on it without fretting, but low enough to remain comfortable. The middle pick-up is set a little higher than the normal Stratocasters so those Bonnie Raitt covers will be accurate - neck and middle together is totally addictive. - Moog Taurus I, T 2071
Moog Taurus I, King Crimson, Zappa, Sklar, Wyman: you can be them... < Back Moog Taurus I T 2071 This marvellous bit of the 1970s gave the guitarist / bassist the opportunity to be Rick Wakeman for a while. This is where it all really started - the first set of bass synth pedals that the professionals really took seriously. Is it as loud as the professionals claimed it to be? Absolutely. It makes the Hall shake - we have had complaints about it from people living in different buildings. In the environments it was designed for, you feel it, then hear it. Yet it DI's straight into the Focusrite, or through the Fishman Soundbox mini and that big arena feeling is right there in the headphones without any tinkering. The Octave button allows you to double the pedal count, and a quick well rehearsed manoeuvre will actually unleash 4 octaves for your feet. Even plugged into a simple transistor amp, this will produce the arena shaking bass - it delivers a real feeling of power even at low decibel counts. These don't regularly come up for sale - often they have lost their control panel surround which is exposes the guts to too much of the outside world of a gig. This example is far from mint, but has not lost any pedals, knobs, or vital components. As with most surviving examples, it has a wonky power cable grommet, but this is still holding firm and doesn't affect its functionality. The LED for the Variable switch has given up, and we have decided not to violate the main PCB to replace this. Other than that, the unit functions as it should. If I were to really nit-pick, just the Oscillator B Frequency slider sometimes needs a little gentle persuasion to fire up its pitch, but it ultimately never fails to do so. It's big, it's basic, it's heavy and it's expensive. But worth it for the vanishingly rare opportunity to make and be seen making, these sounds for real. The previous owner hauled it around in an adapted golf bag, but admits it hasn't been used in anger since the late 1980s. It's 13kg by itself - a typical case will probably nearly double that. This one does not come with a flight case, so ideally, we will carry it down the stairs and place it into your car, but if shipping is required, we had better talk about the options which would include a £375 Swan-Flight Taurus case in yellow.
